Saints Newsletter Update November 2017
We are now full throttle into the season, it’s still early days but the Saints sit a strong 3rd place in Championship SE 2 with 20 points. That is a sterling start in Club Captain Kate Barnes’s eyes! The squad is now settled with some exciting and talented players and ‘new to rugby ladies’ that the phrase keen as mustard is an understatement!
Talyena Brown is one of our newbies, she a mum of three and has not come from a sporting background but she has shown amazing will power and commitment to be a rugby player. She is unfortunately injured but her kids are now registered and playing with the juniors. She has also attended the RFU First Steps into refereeing workshop which was held at the Stoop on 25th November last month in order to pursue her interest in becoming a referee. Rewarding players for their hard graft at training and on the pitch is a key element and we have brought back monthly awards to show player recognition. This month the winners were:
- Georgina Kreysa for Best Trainer
- Rozz David for Biggest Hits Award
- Laura Gott for Most Improved
It’s never easy building a squad and also trying to create depth in men’s or women’s rugby, this season alone we have thirteen new players registered though social media, the new website launch and recruitment campaigns like the RFU Inner Warrior camps. Two talented players who left us last season Katerina Josephides and Sarah Bebbington in order to pursue a higher playing level joined Saracens and are now making regular appearances in the Tyrell Ladies Premiership.
The Saints fully supported their move as although it’s a loss to us, they have an opportunity to further their rugby careers and play at the top level.
It’s nice to have the support at matches whether home or away and we do thank Will Skelton the Saracens Lock, husband of our new fierce openside flanker Kate Skelton, for running the line on more than one occasion!
Aside from league rugby we have the Intermediate Cup to focus on with Round 3 taking place on 7th Jan 2018 against Ellingham and Ringwood Ladies. The ultimate goal to win both of course!
It is not all work and no play! This year our Christmas Social will take place at the award winning restaurant Thompson in St Albans, one of the OA Rugby sponsors. For the first time in many years we will not be in fancy dress and will be ‘glamming it up’! One match then remains to put to bed before the Christmas break and that is the current league leaders Hammersmith and Fulham away at their ground on Sunday 10th December.
