17 — 35
Gladiatorial fight at Welwyn to win 17-35After a friendly inter club fixture last Friday reality bit in the form of a large and streetwise pack from Welwyn Vets away. However, thanks to controlled play from the Gladiators pack led by Steve Maischman and composure from 10 Toby Daly, our youthful side were able to command the game from the off, stretching the opposition left and right to create space leading to two quick pack-led tries for Hadley Eames & Rob Fenton. Both converted by the excellent John Atkins.
Welwyn played some disruptive crash ball rugby to get on the score board and send OAs capt. to the injury bench! Only for replacement 9 Tom Payne to sneak a score for OAs before the end of the half.
The second half continued with OAs dominance, aggressive breaks from blindside Hadley Eames, lock Thom Horne and the centre partnership of Andy Doyle and Kieran McGowan gained OAs territory again and again.
In a 40 metre offloading break, Thom Horne finished the team try of the game, that was quickly followed by a Pete Wampamba special, with a characteristic step, chip, gas and score. Toby completed his 100% record with the boot to convert both tries.
Welwyn scored two good concellation tries at the end, when OAs failed to clear their lines. An uncharacteristic lapse in an otherwise impressive and composed performance.
Man of the match was Thom Horne for beastly tackles and his powerful breaks that caused mayhem for Welwyn all day.
Clear areas to work on in practice next week that will allow us to improve further, as we head to a home pre-season against Belsize Park with a win and confidence growing.
