A Cathartic Result
Whilst Saturday’s result was cathartic it probably wasn’t cataclysmic though some players and spectators alike seemed a little pale and interesting for some time after the match.
Cambridge would not and did not claim to be setting the world afire but their workmanlike approach and their general work rate was far in excess of what Albanians could muster on a disappointing afternoon.
Head Coach Gavin Hogg said his team were somewhat subdued after this encounter, much as they were during it, and they had the traditional ‘full and frank’ discussion in a relatively quiet changing room; hopefully that will go some way to explaining the magnitude of the defeat and providing scope for better days to come.
Cambridge had labelled this match as a ‘must win’ occasion and, truth to tell, Albanians did the same. Yet OAs were out-gunned in virtually all departments, finishing with a scoreline of eight tries to one, collected, deservedly, by Jack Daly, always a live wire at the base of the scrum.
The long road to Caldy beckons next week and sometimes a long coach drive helps to bond a group of players. It is to be hoped the magic works on Saturday.
There are shades of the opening match of the season about last weekend when a similar points avalanche heralded a month of fine performances. May the force be with us!Brian Quinn
