64 — 5
Saints Open UpFor a team that shook up Championship SE 2 last season, Tonbridge Juddians Ladies presented a completely different side after many retirements and players leaving them. Trepidation is how the Saints have always approached Tonbridge as they are very competitive and have quality throughout but they have struggled this season to retain players.
Saints started a little rusty, making a few simple errors at key moments, however nobody could predict what was to unfold over the 80 minutes. The home side opened up with some strong support play and running leading to blocks of scoring throughout the game. Saints’ strike runners were causing Tonbridge problems, often breaking tackles and off-loading well.
Half time approached with Saints 35-5 up, tries by King (2), McKenna, Skelton and Robertson put the home side in control with Robertson’s boot adding all the extras. Instructions were simple during the break, stay focused, improve discipline in key areas, do not lose the plan and shut Tonbridge out.
The 2nd half followed a similar pattern, with Saints reduced to 14 players twice by tackles interpreted to be high, fortunately the score board kept ticking over with further scores by King, McKenna, Abumarzouq, Robertson adding the extras, final score ending 64-5 to Saints.
Head Coach Brown Said “A decent performance against a well drilled Tonbridge side, who made us work hard, causing disruption to our patterns, credit to them even under pressure they never gave up, the score line may suggest a cruise, but that was by no means the case. We have a few things to work on this week, going down to 14 players for a quarter of the game is not acceptable, the tackling standard needs to be better and we need to react positively to that. I am proud of this group, they are being challenged ever week to raise the standards set by themselves and the coaches, so far we are all moving in the right direction”.
