OA Performance builds in Pre Season FriendlyCoach Gavin Hogg took his new charges back to his old stamping ground in Suffolk and was delighted to note the improvements in performance since the somewhat fractured effort the previous week against Leicester Lions.
What was most noticeable was the accuracy of offload and the pass out of contact all of which allowed a more expansive attacking game.
This was altogether a more precise approach and the emphasis on work at the breakdown, with speedy recycling, enabled a talented back line to take advantage of a Bury defensive network which was proved to be, at times, vulnerable to a full-on pace attack.
Scrum and lineout improved with Alex Boggis leading by example and Sean Raffell and Andy Christie, two Saracens Academy members, made nuisances of themselves all afternoon in the back row.
All facets of the squad’s work have to come together to create success and this outing was much more like the finished article. Individually Dan Watt caused all sorts of problems for his opponents at inside centre whilst Craig Dowsett, unavailable last week, demonstrated expert finishing when helping himself to two tries.
Defence was mostly satisfactory and several notches up on last week though As were disappointed to concede a try with the last move of the match as the squad tired.
Next week’s opponents are Chinnor in Oxfordshire, a strong club who have troubled Albanians in the past. Coach Hogg has hinted at another increase in intensity as the squad makes ready for the opening League match against Rosslyn Park the following Saturday. Kickoff at Chinnor 15.00hrs.
