Beckenham Ladies — OA Saints

Saints Battle On

Saints Vs Beckenham has a long history with varied results and in many forms. The previous week witnessed a fine team performance by the Saints, could they repeat this against a tricky Beckenham side?
The first half was a tough, gritty affair, one the players would be happy to bury and the coaches keen to develop the mind set and skills to ensure it does not happen again. Although Saints took the lead through King, extras missed, Beckenham relinquished the lead with a try just before the half time whistle, half time score; 7 – 5.

Direct instructions were deployed to the downtrodden Saints during the break and left the players in no uncertain terms, as to the task ahead and the standards required. The response was fantastic and a dominate performance showed the capabilities of the squad. Another try by King, improved by Robertson, 12 -7 Saints.

Saints applied continued pressure on the home side, only some strong defence kept the waves of attack out and the score increasing, although the constant stream resulted in several penalties being conceded by the home side. Saints could not make the possession and dominance pay off, with two scores ruled out by the official for no clear grounding. Both the scrum and lineout were functioning well, creating more chances from which Robertson knocked over a penalty to extend the lead 15 – 7.

The final few minutes saw chances missed and the bonus point slipping away, Skelton crashed over for the final try around 5mins from the end, no extras added this time. Final score 20 – 7 Saints.

Backs coach Henry Clear commented; “A slow start this week after a trek round the M25. A messy game for both sides in challenging conditions but eventually we found some higher gears, got better organised and created some good scoring opportunities. With Skelton and King touching down to secure the win, although points were left on the field. A win away from home is always good but there is some way yet before we see a complete performance that we are capable of”.
